Edgars just bolstered its online delivery game with a new click-and-collect partnership

Shoppers can now order online and opt for delivery at one of 100 Edgars stores available on Pargo or the platform's network of more than 3,000 pickup points, at a time suitable to them and without rearranging their day or rescheduling couriers as is typical with traditional delivery services.

The Pargo service puts the control in the hands of the consumer by allowing them to choose their delivery day.

The push is the biggest strategic move in the retailer's online delivery offering since the Retailability group and the owners of Legit bought Edgars in 2020. Its former parent, Edcon, moved to initiate business rescue proceedings following years of financial troubles. In an effort to decrease its financial pressures, two years ago, its previous owner decided to radically shrink its store footprint and focused on positioning itself in regional malls rather than in every mall.

The click-and-collect feature helps the retailer widen its reach to its customers in far-flung areas such as rural areas and informal settlements, where delivery of products can be challenging.

The retailer said carrying out delivery services can prove difficult in South Africa, despite the significant gains in the e-Commerce sector.

"Though e-Commerce is growing exponentially in South Africa, delivery can still be tricky for many, especially for those living in regional or outlying areas," Richard Mclennan, Ecommerce head at Retailability, said."It is our aim to deliver on the convenience of online shopping by giving everyone an opportunity to easily get their order no matter where they are in the country. That is why a partnership with Pargo makes so much sense," Mclennan said.

In the retail sector, Pargo, founded in 2015 by Lars Veul and Derk Hoekert, has partnerships with TFG, Mr Price, and Cape Union Mart.

The duo created the delivery service in response to South Africa's delivery challenges and a desire to simplify and make it more convenient for consumers.

"Creating access is what we're all about at Pargo," Veul, Pargo’s CEO, said.

"When we first started out, South Africans living in outlying areas or those with informal addresses had no feasible, reliable delivery option available to them when shopping online, but with Click & Collect, we've been able to solve this critical issue and we are absolutely thrilled that Edgars has chosen our solution to reach those customers too," said Veul.

Thank you Business Insider SA for the great report.
