()Rescue workers in Burkina Faso haverecovered the bodies of four miners who had gone missing after floodwaterssubmerged a Canadian-owned zinc mine in Perkoa, in the Sanguié province of theWest African country.
Eight miners werereported trapped in the underground mine on April 16, triggering a 39-daysearch that offered little hope of finding any survivors.
Six of the missingminers are Burkina Faso nationals while the other two are from Zambia andTanzania, according to the Burkinabe ministry of mines.
"Unfortunately,after 39 days of intense search, the lifeless bodies of four miners werefound," a government statement said Wednesday. It did not reveal thenationalities of the recovered bodies.
The government saidsearch operations will continue until the other four missing miners are found.
Last week, rescueteams found no survivors in the refuge chamber of the mine, which is stockedwith food supplies and located 570 meters underground, deflating hopes that themissing men could be found alive.
Canadian firm TrevaliMining Corp said in a statement the refuge chamber of its Perkoa minewas "found intact," indicating that the missing miners hadn't gottento it.
The Canadian miningcontractor has opted not to disclose the names of its missing miners, "outof respect for the privacy" of their families and friends, it said.
For more than amonth, families of the miners have congregated around the site, in an agonizingwait for news of their loved ones as officials searched the mine which caved infollowing a flash flood.
