The man was found dead at a water drainage tunnel on Thursday.
The victim was reportedly mistaken for a criminal who stole items from a resident, according to police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.
Vuma said the victim was approached by a group of people who accused him of theft and called him a criminal.
She said he fled the group fearing for his life, but the group caught up with him and assaulted him.
“We suspect that they carried his corpse to the water tunnel to hide it from the public.
“He didn’t have gunshot or stab wounds so he was only assaulted with a metal rod,” she said.
“He was reportedly murdered at around 23:00 on Thursday but police officers only went to the crime scene on Friday morning.
The suspects are currently not known but eyewitnesses claim that members of a local taxi association are responsible for the murder.
