Former army chief, driver reunited after 40 years

Eksteen, who was behind the wheel of the general's car in 1981 and 1982, is today a keen winemaker and has shared his wine with the general and numerous other army veterans.

Maroela Media attended the event in the Kruger Gallery on Tuesday.

The dinner was hosted by the Pro Patria Museum and gave the army men the opportunity to exchange anecdotes about their days in the South African Army.

Eksteen had only the highest esteem for Meiring. He says the general, contrary to the norm, always drove in front of the car and sat there and read his newspaper.

To this, Meiring replied that his legs were too long to sit on. "If I had sat in the back, my knees would have been behind my ears," he replied laughing.

At one point Eksteen jokingly told how he accidentally lost Meiring's car keys. He flattened the offices but could not find them anywhere.

"Every day, without exception, the general had a toasted chicken and mayonnaise sandwich for lunch, which I had to pick up at the corner cafe. It was then at this very corner cafe where the keys were only found the next day, ”says Eksteen.

“So is die generaal toe daardie dag met ’n ander motor huis toe; sy eie motorsleutels is die volgende dag eers gevind.”

When Meiring had the opportunity to sit next to Queen Elizabeth II during the Japan Peace Memorial in 1995, everyone wanted to find out with great curiosity what the two had to say to each other.

Meiring replied jokingly: "Oh, we just talked about this and that and about how our rugby team beat theirs."

Meiring is known as one of the so-called Big Five generals of the Border War era - along with Magnus Malan, Constand Viljoen, Jannie Geldenhuys and Kat Liebenberg - and is known as the only general who served as head of the South African Army (1993 -1994) as well as served the South African National Army (1994-1998).

The meal was kicked off with delicious biltong soup, followed by a hamburger and ended with a juicy koeksister.

However, the food shared the spotlight with the interesting anecdotes.

The army men who attended the meal clung to Meiring and Eksteen's lips; the one had more questions than the other.

"It was a privilege for the Pro Patria Museum to have Gen. Meiring and his driver to reunite at this prestigious event after 40 years.

"This museum will in future offer similar opportunities to promote awareness of our rich military heritage and to involve the veteran community as well as their descendants in it," said Jandré du Plessis, general manager of the museum.
