Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said the two arrested officers were a Lieutenant Colonel and a Captain working at the supply chain management’s Hawks national headquarters in Silverton.
“Information about a Lieutenant Colonel who intended to supply SAPS ammunition to a traditional healer was received,” Mbambo said.
This resulted in a sting operation being conducted.
“The female traditional healer (43) was subsequently arrested at her place of residence in Soshanguve on May 27 after an exchange was made.
“She was charged with illegal possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property following the seizure of other items suspected to belong to the state,” Mbambo said.
She said further investigations led to the arrest of the female Lieutenant Colonel, who was charged with theft and dealing in ammunition. Meanwhile, the female Captain was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice after it was discovered that “she tried to conceal evidence in the case”.
The traditional healer will appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court while the two officers will appear in the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 30.
“We expect all our members to be beyond reproach and will ensure that the alleged culprits face the full might of the law. We shall continue to act without fear or favour regardless of the status of those who transgress the law,” said Lebeya.
This was not the first crime arrest involving officers. In February, two police constables from Gauteng Crime Intelligence were nabbed for being part of a group that allegedly planned a robbery.
One of the constables was arrested in a police chase driving an SAPS Nissan X-Trail from crime intelligence fitted with false registration plates, which was seized for further investigation.
